Tatum McDaniel – Women’s Wrestling
Head Coach Tyrone Lewis has often raved about Racer Women’s Wrestling standout Tatum McDaniel—and for good reason. Recently, Newcastle Athletic Director Jeff Brickman asked Coach Lewis what truly sets Tatum apart as a Racer.
Coach Lewis pointed to three defining qualities:
- Her overall commitment, dedication, and ambition to be better than average.
- Her refusal to settle or become satisfied, regardless of shortcomings or accomplishments.
- Her leadership by example, which is infectious and sets a high standard for all underclassmen.
Those traits are evident not only in competition, but in everything Tatum does within the program.
Tatum’s passion for wrestling began early. “I was always interested in wrestling because I started training with my parents at the age of four,” she said. That early foundation helped shape the mindset and work ethic she brings to the mat every day.
When asked what she loves most about wrestling, Tatum points to the intensity and honesty of the sport:
“My favorite thing about wrestling is being on the mat. That moment when it’s one on one, and everything comes down to me—my training, my drive, and my determination. There’s no hiding and no shortcuts. Every second reflects the work I’ve put in long before the whistle ever blew.”
While wrestling is a team sport, Tatum embraces the individual responsibility it demands. “Once you step on the mat it’s just you and your opponent. You carry yourself, your discipline, and the lessons your teammates helped build into you. And that’s the best part—those teammates become family. They push you, break you down, build you back up, and stand beside you no matter the outcome. On the mat, you’re alone, but you’re never truly by yourself.”
As a student-athlete at Newcastle High School, Tatum takes pride in representing her school. “My favorite thing about being a student-athlete at Newcastle is representing my school while pushing myself to be better every day. I get to compete, grow through discipline and hard work, and be part of a team that feels like family—both in the classroom and in competition.”
Looking ahead, Tatum has ambitious goals beyond wrestling. “My goal after college is to earn a degree in criminal justice and pursue a career with the FBI. I want to work in a field where I can help protect others, serve my community, and make a real difference in keeping people safe.” She believes her studies and athletic background will prepare her well for that path, allowing her to combine discipline, teamwork, and a passion for
justice in service to something bigger than herself.
For younger Racers, Tatum offers simple but powerful advice:
“Stay disciplined and consistent. Work hard every day, listen to your coaches, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes—they’re part of getting better. Believe in yourself, support your teammates, and remember that improvement comes from effort, not just talent.”
Tatum McDaniel’s mindset, work ethic, and leadership continue to elevate not only her own performance, but the entire Racer Women’s Wrestling program.
